During the medal ceremony of the 200-meter race of Mexico Olympics 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos of the US received their medals wearing black socks and no shoes. This was a way to represent racial Black poverty in the US. Even the silver medalist, Peter Norman, a White Australian, showed solidarity with the two African-American athletes.
